Year 4 KSSR Homework/Projects

Here are some homework or project that the children had done in 2014 for their Year 4 and Year 1 KSSR.

Due to the new subject in Year 4 that replaces Kemahiran Hidup called Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi and Reka Bentuk dan Teknologi (TMK/RBT), there are more projects to be completed. This is a model which she assembled at school and brought home to play.
Modelling project done at school for RBT

Another example, her class was requested to build a mock periscope in groups. However since Cherry cannot make it for the weekend meet up time for her group, she ended up being allocated work as artist/decorator to decorate the finished product... anyway this project is kind of dangerous for 10 years old students as they are required to cut mirrors to shape, insert the mirror into a toothpaste box, then decorate the periscope.
The instructions in textbook for periscope model

Would prefer them to do it in school rather than group in other kids' houses, like the model which she assembled at school.

And a funny project teaching them how to sew. Mom doesn't sew, so she gets to do at school like this haha...
Stitching :)
TMK has more computer based projects so she and classmates contribute to a file sending back and forth. They are trying to teach the students how to use powerpoint and insert/edit pictures.

Even Pendidikan Moral had them busy with projects....

As for Science, she did a few mini projects like looking for all types of leaves around the housing area, big leaves, small leaves, different type of roots etc. And teaching the students about cubes.
Science KSSR Year 4, about cubes.
I think they watched more videos/presentations that teacher had done in class.

As for the little boy just starting Year 1 in primary school, he has more projects now that teachers are more familiar with KSSR style. Here is a drawing for English, and a Merdeka craft assembled as cap.

Drawing and labelling clothes for English Year 1

A more significant topic I noticed for Year 4 KSSR Kesihatan is all about kids' body changes and growing up. At first I was thinking it seemed a little early to teach them this topic but actually there are quite a lot of the kids going through changes from 9 years old onwards (Year 3). Even though it did not really help those who are early developers, it reached out to those who are around the average age of development (around 10 years old).

Penang Science Cluster Workshops - Robotics, Squishy Circuit, Fun With Science - Pressure, Motor Challenge and Mathe-gami

The children attended several workshops at Penang Science Cluster during the school holidays. I just found out about it and arranged for them to attend, kind of in continuation of what they did not get to attend for Penang Science Fair. Papa was very good to go back-and-forth to register at the Penang Science Cluster office at Krystal Suite. It is near to Bayan Lepas FIZ, so I think it is convenient for those volunteers who work there.

The first workshop they attended is Robotics Level 1 (RM20 per child). However 哥哥 was not eligible to attend Level 2 due to his age. So we didn't sign up the children for Level 2, didn't want one to attend and the other not able to and whine & moan about it. Next school holidays we will definitely enrol them for Robotics Level 2. Didn't manage to get any photos for Robotics though, too bad.

The second Science workshop during the holidays they attended is Squishy Circuit (RM20 per child). They learnt about materials that conduct electricity and those that do not. When they brought back the little gingerbread-man, when connected with LED and battery, it does conduct electricity and light up!

After that, they attended Fun With Science - Pressure (RM30 per child). It was a super fun session conducted by Dr LoLo. He's so funny, according to the children. They laugh and laugh at his jokes. Well, I laughed at one too, which the children repeated to me. I mean, it's just too funny the way they describe about hair-dryer and toilet paper even though I didn't attend the class.

The next one is Motor Challenge (RM20 per child). There were many volunteers helping the children to build the motor and make it work. Cherry got a little gift for being one of the top 3 fastest motor.

Mathe-gami (RM20 per child) is the last one they manage to attend. They successfully made a froggie that really leap! Baby Orange was fascinated when Cherry showed him the leaping frog :)

Too bad they couldn't attend one class called Dodomons, it looked quite interesting. I had went all the way to pay cash, then only be told through phone that the children cannot attend as the class was full and they couldn't make adjustments. Had to go and get refund separately. Anyway, other than this time, there weren't any trouble before. So since the children enjoyed the workshops, we will continue sign up during school holidays.

The children enjoyed the workshops very much. They begged me to sign them up for more workshops if there are suitable ones that can be slotted in their schedule :)

Back To School Preparation 2015

We had done back-to-school shopping early this time as Papa is busy travelling again!

Initially thinking nothing much to update for back-to-school shopping, but we ended up spending quite a lot, in my opinion. We parked at First Avenue nowadays and walk to the uniform shops at Jalan Magazine. The tow truck goes around towing people's car quite frequently there nowadays, so better don't risk it.

School Uniforms from Kimnovak Penang, Jalan Magazine

As usual, we got the school uniforms from Kimnovak Penang (I had been using Kimnovak uniforms since my own school days). We only got 1 set girl's uniform for Cherry, pinafore in size 29L (RM33) and size 4 girl's white shirt (RM18). Her old pair of pinafore in size 28L is still in good condition after 2 years of usage (my previous post about it), only it is slightly above her knees. We got her a new pair in bigger size when she needs to look more presentable (it reaches to her knees). For 哥哥, his white shirts had taken much beating and stains from art at school and his sweating. We got him two size 13 boy's white shirt (RM23.50). Expensive! I think the bigger the size the more expensive it is. But we still swallow it because of the good quality. The children wears school uniform for a good 7 hours each day including commute time. So in my opinion, it's better to get soft cottony material uniform. The people here are efficient in getting us sizes to try, but the atmosphere is rushed even though there still isn't the back-to-school rush yet. We got nothing even though our total purchase amount is RM98 :P

New School Bag From Hing Lee Penang

Cherry's old Silver Star Hello Kitty school bag from Hinn Lee lasted from mid-year 2012 Standard 2 to finishing Standard 4. During her Standard 4 year, the inner lining had torn but still usable so we didn't get her a new bag. But towards the end of Year 4 (luckily not in the middle of the school year!), the supporting metal holding the trolley handle at the bottom had fallen off. Papa repaired it one time but the second time it dropped off, she didn't even realize the metal thingy is gone. So have to get new one for Standard 5 next year. This time, the cartoon design school bags comes in fancy 3D designs :P Some are even detachable, can be used as both trolley and carry on the back. We don't let her use a backpack for school as it would be more than 30% of her weight when the bag is loaded with textbooks, workbooks and exercise books.

She still chose one simple trolley bag, pretty much like the one she is used to, costing RM70.. The kind people from Hing Lee were prompt in helping us choose a school bag and gave the children 2 free time-tables. They are moving to new location at 50, Jalan Macalister, due to the new hotel development in the area.
Hello Kitty design school bags, 3D Hello Kitty design school bag, trolley bag
Old vs new Hello Kitty school trolley bag. The new one has 3D Hello Kitty design.

Hope the new 3D Hello Kitty bag will last until she finishes Primary Year 6! Big hope :) For Year 5 and Year 6 she will be on the ground floor so we really hope the bag will last. For Year 1 and Year 4 she had to bump up and down the first floor in school, so I guess that is why each time they finish the school year with classroom on first floor their school bag is pretty much ruined.

School Shoes From Pallas

Papa don't want to buy spare school shoes and just request the children to use their old pair as spare. That's because somehow 哥哥 cannot wear the spare shoes we bought last time. Too big foot? Too wide-footed? No idea, it just doesn't fit him. We bought new ones for 哥哥 as his already has holes on the side.

School Shorts from Tesco

It was on sale! It was only RM5 per piece, or RM9 for 2. OK, so Cherry refused to wear it as shorts for her PE lesson, or official kokurikulum functions. At least, she agreed to wear it for her Maths Olympiad class so that I can wash her shorts. Good old 哥哥 agreed to wear it for his Robotics and Maths Olympiad class from next year :)
Track shorts in Navy and bicycle shorts in black.
So can see why bicycle shorts is worn underneath school pinafore and the track shorts is worn with t-shirt.
The largest size I can find is a size 12, so if any child needs a bigger size, they would have to get the proper ones from uniform brands/shops. Have not seen this type of cheap shorts at Giant or Jusco though. They just have the normal uniform type.

Modesty Shorts For Girls

In the middle of school year last year, the school teachers were asking girls in morning session to wear school shorts underneath their school uniforms. At that time, I was fuming mad over this "new rule" as it is very difficult to find such shorts in supermarkets in the middle of school year. I definitely didn't want to spend RM20+ to buy another pair of the formal school shorts from the uniform shops. Besides, those formal school shorts are of heavier school uniform material. She'd be quite hot if she had to wear those 3 layers of clothing! For me, the most problematic part of going to town for uniforms is parking and it was a busy time for us with Baby Orange just a newborn back then. The cheap school shorts from Tesco is not available all year round, only for back-to-school promotion time.

Finally, we manage to find black bicycle shorts for her from Tesco at RM3.90 per piece. It is meant to be bicycle pants, but somehow the fit is loose for her, it looks more like shorts :P Still the purpose is only serving as modesty shorts, to be worn underneath her pinafore skirt. So I told Cherry, if any of your teachers complain please ask them to call me and I will give them a piece of my mind haha. Nobody complaint so she'll continue wearing it. She said the bicycle pants is not uncomfortable at all and willingly wears it every day underneath her school uniform pinafore.

By the way, she won't be wearing the Tesco shorts as modesty shorts as it is kind of longish compared to the bicycle shorts. She didn't want to wear those RM10-for-3 labelled as safety pants (available per pack in 3 colours of black, navy and grey), she said those looked too much like underwear :P

Geminids Meteor Shower Viewing at USM

The children do so want to watch the Planetarium show but didn't get a chance this holidays. However they went for the 2014 Geminids meteor shower viewing instead. As they study a little bit of astronomy in KSSR Science for Year 4, I encouraged both of them to appreciate the wonders of the universe. And what nearest way to this when Geminids meteor shower happening right where we can see? Again courtesy of USM, the children get to have this experience :)

Too bad they didn't see anything for the first day they went, probably they went back too early.
At the talk before going to watch Geminids meteor shower

First day, didn't observe any Geminids meteor shower as they went back early

With lecturer who gave talk on Geminids

The next night, they pestered Papa to go again, not giving up at all. This time they really see and and observed the Geminid meteor shower. They were so happy!
Went again for Geminids meteor shower observation

Getting upclose with a powerful telescope
Hopefully next time, they get to go for more such nature sightings again if time permits. I file this post under Holiday Workshop as initially I thought they'd be going to see a planetarium show :P

Water Supply Interruption and Baby Orange Got The Flu - Baby Orange Month 7 Update

It was tiring month 7 for us and Baby Orange as he had flu and cough, and we had water supply interruption at our apartment.

Baby Orange smiling on a good day

Baby Orange recovering from flu. Difficulty in taking medication. Throw up medicine, cry indefinitely. Good for 2 days, then use tongue to block medicine syringe, then spit out. Had a sinus gas thingy by 2nd visit to paed. 3/12 Given a spray, and recovering upon using the spray.

Last weight = 7.0 kg

Cherry accompanied him to the dr's clinic twice

gas treatment for baby, recovering from flu
Baby Orange given some gas treatment to help with the throat (or something like that).
Cried non-stop during treatment until too tired and fell asleep.

Wasn't feeding well especially during medication period. Didn't want bottle and didn't want latch on. Pull off breast only after a few sucks. Have to coax and carry in arm almost whole night. Coax, latch, unlatch. Coax, latch, unlatch. Body temperature higher when refusing feed and water.

Oh no! Got my period after so long when Baby Orange is about 7 months. I felt serious cramping whenever I direct latch on Baby Orange for breastfeeding, and even pumping.

Major water supply interruption the 3rd week of Nov after doctor's visit. Luckily Papa is around, he and 哥哥 carried buckets of water from the PBA truck assigned to service our apartment. With the PBA truck here, that means PBA is already working on the issue. It's a wonder no one from the apartment management noticed, as the water tank had run dry before it was noticed.

The two older children had cold baths, as there weren't water from the tap to use the water heater shower. On the first day of water supply interruption, the two children refilled their water bottles at school. Papa bought big bottles of drinking water from Tesco for us. We filled up the thermal with drinking water, and use that mixed with drinking water to wash Baby Orange's bottles, pacifier and medicine syringe. As a breastfeeding mom, I really need to have clean water supply to clean the pump, milk collection shells in addition to Baby Orange's stash.

It's so primitive and pathetic washing dishes with buckets of water. Laundry was piling up, stinky laundry too at that :( And poor Baby Orange, he didn't get to bathe for a couple of days. All while recovering from flu too. When Papa fed him the flu and cough medicine, usually some will dribble onto Baby Orange's clothes. Sometimes our clothes kena the sticky sweet medication too when he threw up the medicine.

We had always taught the children to appreciate getting clean water from our taps, so they learnt a major lesson about the importance of clean water supply. After the second day of no water supply, Papa keep calling PBA as the water they supply via truck could not be used as drinking water. He is fed up buying bottles of drinking water from Tesco :P Finally PBA agreed to look into this problem, and the solution as Papa's suggestion. They loaded water into our apartment water tank (I think it had a filter or something) and this indirectly restored water supply. The PBA guy manning the truck told Papa he refilled the water tank with 7 or 8 truckloads of water for the apartment dwellers. Only our apartment had water supply interruption for about 4 days. I told Papa if he wasn't around this time, he would definitely get an earful of noise from me if I had to do it all by myself, and with poor Baby Orange sick at that time too!

Soap Bubble Fun and Water Rocket workshop at USM, Muzium dan Galeri Tuanku Fauziah

The children had fun in these two back-to-back workshops, or rather kids' activity. I forgot if we paid RM5 or RM10 for each child to join.

I think they were about the first ones there :)

Next is Water Rocket Workshop. According to Papa and the children, this one is a little dangerous as they saw some kids cut themselves a little when using penknife to cut the plastic bottle. 哥哥  cut his finger lightly too, he didn't realize it until back home. But he didn't fret over it, as he was too excited getting a water rocket blast off successfully.
