A fun weekend with Ally

Ally is the children's cousin. She's embarking on her first solo trip and she chose to balik kampung! Of course she has to stay with us for the weekend.

What are the fun we had? Eat, play, talking, taking photos, FB'ing. Loads of food and noise :)

First we went for dinner at Kulim Forest Restaurant with their grandparents. The rickety road leading to this place is near to the rickety one we took to "bridge to nowhere" Pulau Bunting Bridge :) See the pebbles-type road with the restaurant sign, it's this way for a few minutes. Seems like eateries with gimmicks like fish-farming is popular, but it doesn't look like they rear the fishes at this place. I could be mistaken :P
Outside Kulim Forest Restaurant
We had durian before dinner, it was kind of forced on us. They brought out kampung durian and Green Skin durian. I had one pcs, 姐姐 had 3 pcs, 弟弟 tried one bite and said yucky again, the rest finished up by Ally and 爸爸. I couldn't take more as most of the stuff are just lumpy unlike the ones 爸爸 bought. Even 姐姐 say she likes durian, but she didn't finish the lumpy parts, and majority are polished off by 爸爸. Both Ally and 姐姐 prefer sweet-tasting durians. Whoa, the durian aftertaste really kills. And the durian smell afterwards too, as they just threw the skin and seeds at a box by our table. Food is really mediore, everything just tasted too sweet. 爸爸 ordered steamed catfish, assorted beans type veggie (supposed to be spicy but just tasted sweet), pork with salted fish, hot-plate tofu (lots of minced pork), sweet and sour pork, stir-fried veggie. Maybe he just didn't know how to order. Nice ambient but please don't ask me to go there anymore!

As soon as it gets dark, the mozzies start attacking Ally, the children and I (it is in the "forest" after all, so slather on mozzie repellant if anyone's still going to try this place. On our way back, we saw a few fireflies, though pales in comparison to the Nibong Tebal firefly watching trip.
Inside Kulim Forest Restaurant
Ally stayed the night with us and the children bugged her like mad :) The children told us the next day they stayed up really late :P

The next day, we went for lunch at Traders The Islander after 姐姐's Maths class. Unfortunately no western soup that day and I match the nice bread with coffee only. Strange that many tables are full of senior citizens :P I guess that's why they had "kiam chai ark" soup. Well, at least put out the regular mushroom soup. The children loved the desserts and ice cream as usual.
These photos taken by Ally

Ice cream at The Islander and durian display at Penang Times Square
We passed by Penang Times Square and I asked to for a photo of the durian display, to remember the durians we had yesterday but didn't take any shots as we got our hands messy (and ehem, smelly). See the blue sky in the durian display photo? The haze was bad last week, just clearing up during the weekend after a few drizzles. 姐姐 had music class replacement later, Ally and 弟弟 stayed home.

The play part comes next, even though they play at home. The children bugged us to go to playground, and I think they kind of remember where it is when they passed it. No photos there as they were running around so much and pity Ally as they pulled her arms to go here and there, screaming her name. Probably the whole playground knows her name already :) Then, window-shopping at Gurney Plaza since she hasn't been there quite some time.

Ally said 弟弟 took this photo :P

Of course after such a heavy lunch, we bring Ally for "lighter" dinner, the seafood noodle/porridge place at Sungai Tiram called Joo Leong Cafe. I had mee sua, 姐姐 and Ally had maggi noodles, 弟弟 had vermicelli (bee hoon), then there's the popular toast and satay to share upon 弟弟's request.

Taken by Ally again
Back home at night, the children bugged her to play again, and I think they all fell asleep trying to sing "12 Days Of Christmas" in the dark.

As it was 五月初五 端午节 (Duanwu Festival, 5th day of the 5th month in Chinese calendar), her mission is to lug back rice dumplings (she helped to make these) and Him Heang biscuits to Klang. Only 爸爸 eats rice dumplings at our home so she got a big pack :D 姐姐 hate fatty pork meat, and I hate five spice powder. Somehow 弟弟 haven't taken any liking for it despite being meat eater.

She made it back home safe and sound! Successful solo trip for a girl going into adulthood :)
See Ally's own encounter for her trip, didn't know she took so many photos with the children :P

Penang Youth Park

姐姐 and 弟弟 were asking and asking to go to a playground, and since we're early for dinner, we stopped by Penang Youth Park for a short playtime. The Youth Park is nice playground for children and there are many families there during the weekend. Since our last visit some time back (seems like years that we had photos), they had added a nice little decorative pond. Luckily we went earlier, as the haze got really bad on Sunday.

The pond at Penang Youth Park

The playground. They are especially fond of the climbing apparatus.
By the time we got to Starview restaurant, it was closed to public as they are having a wedding dinner banquet. Ah, we should have called to ask next time. Every place is full, and we were wondering why. Did I just conveniently forgot it's Father's Day weekend since we had celebrated earlier? :) Finally we decided to go to our favourite fish and chips place at Straits Quay. It was also full house, but they have one table left by the door, which we took as we're hungry by now! There is no longer free parking at Straits Quay but have to pay RM1 per entry, even though first hour is still free.

Hm, why is 爸爸 getting two Father's Day celebration? :P He ordered Father's Day set meal. Everything is delicious! 姐姐 and I ordered fish and chips and I had seafood chowder (appetizer size) to share. Yum, delicious! Especially the dessert with vanilla ice-cream and apple pie, so pretty but the children finished in minutes. End up his Father's Day set is shared with the children :)

Before going back-to-school - IFOODex and early Father's Day celebration at Dragon-i

We went to Jelutong morning market for last minute back-to-school shopping. Too hot, no photos :)

In the afternoon, was tempted to check out what does Food Fair looks like. It's the IFOODex at PISA, Penang that I meant. Quite disappointed, as there was Korean food shown on The Star. Only the ham/sausage/steamboat fish ball stuff are in freezers. All the rest are dried food. I thought it'd be like the Korean Food Fair at Gurney Plaza last year where there'd be variety. I was searching high and low for kimchi.

These two were busy trying out everything that came their way at IFOODex 2012
Still hungry, so we went for small Father's Day celebration with 爸爸 at Dragon-i. The children had 2 pcs of Shanghainese steamed meat dumpling 上海小笼包 each. 姐姐 had 2 servings of la mian with Shanghainese pork chop (in the kid's bowl) and 弟弟 had some steamed rice with minced pork and egg. And they ate the desserts below, except durian pancake which 姐姐 only tasted for a bite and that's it. 弟弟 say it's smelly and stay far away from it. So the durian pancake are left for us.

They had piggy bun, 奶皇流沙包, durian pancake

In the end, found my usual Chongga mat kimchi at Aeon, so much for trying to get it at the IFOODex.

Tea-time treat at Starbucks Auto-City and dinner at 香树下河鲜 Big Tree Restaurant Kulim

The children got a treat at tea-time as they did quite well for mid-year (in our opinion). 弟弟 just got his mid-term exam papers back, comments from teachers are good and he improved on his concentration in class. 姐姐 did well in my opinion too by looking at her marks. There is no position in class for 弟弟's kindy, and 姐姐 didn't have position in class yet. I would say it's not as important as giving good effort, but I would jump if hers slide too far away. We decided to give a little reward for their hard work. Of course I'm easily satisfied as of now and I have to keep reminding myself not to compare :)

The sharks ate it before I can fend them off for a photo
They loved the Chocolate Cookie Crumble Frappucino and this is all that's left of the chocolate caramel cake I ordered. Hm, I still preferred the Java Chip Frappucino, that has more chocolate crunchy bits to it.

姐姐 was telling us "我已经想要吃 Haagen Daz ice-cream 很久了!" when we pass by the outlet. Me tells her, why not you go and win some vouchers and bring us all there :) I am cruel about it since I don't agree with Haagen Daz concept, too fancy for children :P

After tea, we went for dinner with grandparents. We had a unique dining experience in Kulim at Big Tree Restaurant 香树下河鲜. The children enjoyed looking at the fishes in the fish ponds, and there are so many fishes! They were marvelling how the fishes seem to gather around the water pipes. It was hot at the restaurant which has zinc roofs (or some kind of 铁板 type roof), but there's a natural kampung feel to it. That's why we spend quite a lot of time looking at fishes as it is breezier near the fish ponds. Not many people as we were there before 7pm, but by the time we finish eating there are many cars parked outside.

香树下河鲜 Big Tree Restaurant
They even have a Facebook page 香树下 Big Tree Restaurant :) Good thing as I didn't capture any photo of the restaurant 招牌, it was already too dark by the time I saw it. The signature fish dish is fresh and delicious, the veggie is fresh, homemade tofu is good. But the rest like plum chicken and egg is very ordinary. They also had the fried porridge (炒粥), but the children didn't like it. To me it tasted like seafood porridge with 蚝豉 taste, salty and dark colour :) Sorry, don't know how to appreciate this signature dish.

Penang Children's Library I-Play renewal

It just so happened we visited I-Play during our 1 year anniversary of joining the library! Since I got the children's membership renewed, might as well borrow some books home. This is the last year 姐姐 can renew her I-Play membership as it's only for children up to 8 years old. She is very sad about it.

So surprised and happy to see Mandarin version of Doraemon comics which is still quite new. Oh well, it is school holidays after all. 弟弟 is reading a book we have at home about emergency vehicles. 爸爸 curi-curi read the Doraemon comics too.

Chatuchak and Chao Phraya boat ride - Friso Go Explore! Bangkok With Children Day 4

Last day of our Bangkok trip! Although it is a short trip, we have covered the activities that our children would like to experience. We did not cover visiting to traditional places at Bangkok like the famous Wat's and Grand Palace as they decided not to go. At their age of 5 and 7 years old at this time of visiting Bangkok, they have no interest in such attractions.

On the second day when arranging their clohes, I asked 姐姐 what she wanted to wear. I brought along her 2 batik dresses for hot places. She decided right away, she said "I will wear the orange dress to Safari World and red dress to the market. If I wear red dress to Safari World, later the bull will chase me". Hahahaha!

Leisurely breakfast at last today (but 爸爸 did not want to take photo for me :p). We took the BTS from Siam BTS station to visit Chatuchak Weekend Market. From Siam to Mochit (these are the BTS station names), a convenient single ride of about 15 minutes, we don't even have to change stations. Still have to pay for 弟弟 as he is over the 90cm limit for free ride. From Mochit BTS station, it's a short 5 minutes walk through Chatuchak Park to the Chatuchak Weekend Market (爸爸 say follow the crowd, everyone's going to the Weekend Market anyway).

Chatuchak Park and Chatuchak Weekend Market.
The top right photo is taken opposite Novotel Siam Square. 弟弟 is so interested in the Mentos pillars and mention them every single time he sees them.
We only walked around Chatuchak Weekend Market for a really short time. There are many stalls but must haggle. The smell of longkang, the small puddles here and there (due to almost daily evening showers?), the leaking roof at certain areas (姐姐 complaint when she kena some water dripping from the roof), the heat inside the stalls (seems like the market is housed under multiple big zinc roofs) is really not what we want to spend time at. Maybe it's a bit cooler in the early mornings. Cannot for the life of me imagine taking the children to eat at this market seeing the condition how the prepared food, although this seems no worse than Penang's street hawkers. When in foreign land, do not take such risk with children, right? The end of trying to sample local tasting mango sticky rice :P So we made our quick exit and the children are so happy to get out from the market. As if we forced them there, we just want to bring them to see famous places.

The escape from Chatuchak is a great relief indeed. Our next agenda is to check out Chao Phraya River. 爸爸 did mention it looks like one big canal with brownish water. Again, we took the BTS from Mochit to Saphan Taksin (don't remember did we change train at Siam?), where the pier to take river boat is located. There's even a little logo like "boat on water" seen on the map at BTS station so that you won't miss it :) It's only a few minutes walk to the pier and there's sign at the BTS station which exit to go.

BTS, at the Sathon pier and the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat
We took the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat for fun. We're not going to get off at any of the piers but just to take a boat ride. We didn't do enough research prior and ended up spending one hour on the boat ride both ways (thought like 10 minutes ride :P). It was only 40B per person (one-way, pay same amount to go back same way). I think there's another type of boat for locals and it's very crowded. The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat goes from Sathon pier to Phra Arthit pier and back. It was on this boat ride that we notice a nifty way of visiting the Wats and Grand Palace is to take the BTS, then buy the 150B all-day pass for boat ride to hop-on-hop-off and walk the rest of the way. To cross the river between attractions there is another boat service, most probably have to pay a small amount, not sure since we didn't try it. We saw the famous attractions along Chao Phraya River, like Wat Arun, Wat Pho (didn't recognize it so didn't take photos from the boat), Grand Palace, Holy Rosary Church, Memorial Bridge, the Navy headquarters, Rama 8 Bridge. The children say Rama 8 Bridge looks like Penang Bridge (ya la, after all it's similar looking cable-stayed bridge).

Wat Arun, Holy Rosary Church, Grand Palace and Rama 8 Bridge seen from the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat

Map showing attractions along Chao Phraya River
Finally we go back to Siam for lunch. I got some mixed noodles with boiled fish in Tom Yum soup. End up the mixed means mixed type of fishballs and fish cakes :) Spicy! Children had to have mango sticky rice again, don't get the fascination with having mango sticky rice almost everyday on this trip. We thought of going to MBK. However, it rained heavily then and we'd not have enough time as our airport transfer is at 4pm from hotel. 爸爸 say we'd have preferred MBK compared to Chatuchak, well maybe next time :) We couldn't extend another day as 弟弟 have music class replacement the next day, and it's Thailand's public holiday Visakha Bucha Day.

Time to go home! One thing I notice about Bangkok is the sky whenever we travel around. Even it's not raining, it is never blue the days we were there, it's always greyish. Asked 爸爸 who visit for business trips frequently this year, and he only had seen a few times where the sky is blue. All the more to appreciate our hometown Penang :)

Thanks to Friso for this wonderful holiday!

Safari World - Friso Go Explore! Bangkok With Children Day 3

For our 3rd day at Bangkok, we booked a local tour to Safari World. Another early start to a day full of activities (ehem, walking). Very wordy post ahead due to local tour "extra" so please don't say I didn't give warning. Pickup at 7:45am from the hotel lobby and we're early (I had to emphasize EARLY as we ended up on a late start at Safari World). However this local tour is off on a not-so-good start as one other group cancelled at the last minute. We wasted precious time waiting for the local guide to make rearrangement (and not our fault for all this trouble too). In the end, another tour group joined ours with more people. Safari World is about 1 hour drive from Bangkok city center. We're already running late and reached Safari World around 10am. The place is already swarmed with tourists and visitors as it's a Saturday.

Safari World is divided into 2 parks, Marine Park and Safari Park. All the shows are at Marine Park except the feeding show which the local tour didn't take us (I think not enough time).

Around the grounds at Safari World entrance
We missed the first show even though we ran all the way - the Orang Utan Show at 10:20am. So we were ushered to the Bird Show instead. The show times are not presented in the map/guide but available on memo board at the park. Luckily our guide had marked down all the show times on the map she distributed to us.

The Bird Show is a good one, other than the usual tricks the parrots are also vocally trained. So impressed that the parrots can say greetings in various languages like "Sawadee kap", "你好", "How are you". They can also sing, they sang a short line of "Jingle Bells" and "Happy Birthday". We've never heard a parrot sing before, and it's on tune too! And it played the keyboard!

Bird Show, Sea Lion Show and walrus
We rushed to catch the 11am Sea Lion Show. We decided to take off before the Bird Show ended as we cannot miss the Sea Lion show. The children loved sea lions so much! And the show, it's amazing, exciting, funny, very entertaining.

Next we rushed to see the Elephant Show at 11:40am. There's a choice between Western Cowboy Stunt Show and Elephant Show at the same time. Decided to choose Elephant Show as safari should emphasize on animals, right? The place is so big and we kind of got a little lost. In the end we followed one of the staff who is on the way there with other families. It's at the other far end of Marine Park. Now you see why the rush? The show times are very close together, there are many visitors (need to trudge slowly to get out of the show area), the place is big and lugging two young children around takes time (and we need toilet stops too). Along the way, we stopped to see walrus right outside the venue of Elephant Show. The trainer was there, and he got the walruses to do the "sawadee kap" pose. So cute (even though walruses there are huge)! But we didn't manage to get photos as it happened so fast.

Now that I've mentioned toilet, even though I'm no toilet reviewer, I'm always observing the toilet condition and cleanliness of the places we went. Bangkok amazes me that all the toilets we went to are clean, even with heavy visitor traffic. The toilets at Safari World is even more amazing as they won the "Best Public Toilet of the Year" (although no indication what year). The toilets are jungle themed, one of those I went to is even build around a real tree. How's that fr natural? :)

Ok, back to the Elephant Show. Grand as expected, as Thailand really has done well with elephant shows. How about massage by the elephants? If you're not afraid of being stepped on, please volunteer :) And how about elephants painting, not one but four elephants together, each painting a different style. I told 姐姐, you better practise your drawing more as the elephant seems to be able to paint even better than you :P Of course, it also means the elephant can paint and draw better than me. 500B for each painting if anyone's interested to buy. Serene, calming music is played while the elephants painted. 爸爸 being the camera-man of our crew, was busy taking photos earlier, so I thought we would have a photo with the paintings the elephants had done. Mana tahu, he must be either too mesmerized, or feel sleepy with the soothing music that we didn't have a single photo at all. Bleh! (Posting here as I believe he will never read such a wordy post)

Elephant Show and Seal Cove
On the way to get our lunch, we chanced upon Seal Cove and just had to take a stop. From the Elephant Show, it's a long walk from one far end of the park to the restaurant.

Lunch is buffet style and included in the local tour package, nothing impressive as usual. We had already conditioned the children to eat whatever that's put in front of them, no choosy-choosy and glad to report they are co-operative. Again, like yesterday at Dream World, we refilled our water bottles at lunch as there are no drinking water fountains around. We had to make it quick for lunch for several reasons. One being, we already decided to take a photo feeding tiger cub (think queue again!). Second is we wanted to go to Safari Terrace to feed giraffes. Third is the next show, Beluga and Dolphin Show is starting at 1:30pm! Oh oh oh, how do you do everything in such a short time? We're staying only until 3:30pm. That's why have to be early ya, which in our case is not our fault. Again have to point out the downside of being late and grumble about it with the next development of our visit.

Already being short of time, the local guide had to tie us down by persuading the whole group to take a tour at gem factory after we're done with Safari World. She had already mentioned gem factory in exchange for Orang Utan Show after we came out from the Bird Show but I had cut her short as we cannot miss the Sea Lion Show. The way she said it is "I give you back the Orang Utan Show that you missed this morning. But we will be late getting back to the city, and I cannot send you back to hotel one by one. So we will bring you to gem factory and they will have free transport available to bring you back to your individual hotels". Huh? Since when did gem factory became free transport hub, is their business so bad they have to double as transport provider? Hey do you remember we paid for the tour package which includes TRANSPORT? We already told her not interested at all for the second time.

After wolving down lunch in 20 minutes, we rushed outside to where the venue where we can take photo with tiger cub. The local guide helped us secure our place in a jiffy while an army of other visitors crowd around, some still undecided and chatting among themselves. 399B for this family photo, and we loved the activity! The tiger cub is sucking at the milk bottle so fast (maybe faster than the way we wolved down our lunch?). The children say the tiger cub's fur is a little prickly and hard, not soft like cats (tigers are wild animals, remember children?). The local tour guide even helped us take our photo printout as she know we wanted to feed giraffes. Thanks to her for that!

Feeding tiger cub with milk
Next we bring the children feeding giraffes at Safari Terrace. This is one of the most outstanding activity at Safari World for me, as we have never got so close to giraffes before. We go up a platform and saw giraffes surrounding the platform to be fed. The platform actually borders Safari Park at the habitat of the group of giraffes. At the platform, we can see the Safari Park. We bought a bucket of sweet potatoes and bananas for the giraffes at 40B. The children were scared at first, they are so big and some of them seem so hungry! Their blackish tongue is lashing out whenever the children came nearer to them with the bananas or sweet potatoes. I was near squealing at the sight of their tongues :P

Safari Terrace feeding giraffes
No time to lose as we ran all the way back to watch the Beluga and Dolphin Show. Everyone had said it's not to be missed. Not to mention the children loved dolphins and were so disappointed they couldn't see them last year at Singapore Underwater World and Dolphin Lagoon. Bravo, good show! I mean, let's not get into the heated debate on educational etc, it's fun show for the children :) Everything is in Thai, with very few words in English and Mandarin, but action speaks louder than words.

Beluga and Dolphin Show
To our surprise, there is photo session with dolphin! At 450B and with a toy dolphin thrown in, really cannot miss it. Both the children are so excited! We're given some liquid to disinfect our hands, and we waded onto the platform. The trainer will whistle for the dolphin and it will swim to and stay at the platform, hold its pose to take photo with us. So clever and obedient! The staff helped us take photos with our camera. 弟弟 was "massaging" the dolphin, and the children say its skin felt plasticky (haha what a way to describe).

Photo session with dolphin!
Next is the Spy War Show at 2:30pm, 弟弟 says he wants to watch this. Explosions and splashes at the wet zone  :)
Spy War Show and around the park
White World and Orang Utan Show
Before we go into venue for Orang Utan Show, we had a quick look around White World. Only the white tigers there, as polar bear had been moved. We really do not have 缘 with polar bear, last year at Singapore Zoo they were moved too. Last show we saw is the Orang Utan Show at 3:30pm. Very funny and entertaining. The mock muay thai fighting is so funny, especially the mock prayers the orang utan did before the match. Hahaha! After the show, the children shook hands with one of the orang utan. They say her hands felt like human (of course dears, they are humans' closest cousins).

By now, I'm already so impressed with the shows at Safari World, and so are the children. Even though all the shows are in Thai, and we don't understand a single word except for the occasional English or Mandarin that they throw in, but we still enjoyed them very much. They really know how to put on impressive, entertaining shows. After every show, there is plenty of paid photo opportunities, up-close with the animals. It's very hot at the show venues (can see from the sweaty looks of the children's photos), so we're always using the fan that we bought there.

Last visit is to tiger's den, there's a little "glass house" and tunnel going into the den. Very low for adults, and even children stooped to get through. We scrambled out quickly, and only dared to go in as we saw another family going in earlier. Last minute buy of Thai-style pancakes, got some free ones as closing time soon.

Tigers' den and Safari Park
Then we met up with the rest of the group at the Marine Park entrance. The van we came in took us for a ride around the Safari Park. Photos will not turn out nice as it's dark in the van, and we're not allowed to open the windows. Tigers and lions are in separate area with electric gate (or so the sign says).

All the way back to the city, the children snoozed as they're so tired.

Guide map of Bangkok Safari World for reference
The local tour stuck to its words and detoured to a gem factory. There were pretty ladies at the front door dressed in Thai-style dresses (very glamour uniform wor). The rest of the group were asked to go down for a tour, but we didn't as the children sleeping. In the end, we waited in the van for about 10 minutes and our guide came back, and we're going back to hotel with the same van. Great, no need to hitch a hike with the free transport at gem factory :) However it's getting late, and there's traffic jam everywhere. Our van even took wrong turns and had to ask for directions to the hotel. I'm like, didn't you just came this morning, mister? By the time we reach hotel, it's already dark. Immediately had a quick freshen up and almost ran to Siam Paragon for dinner.

爸爸 recommend this Japanese food outlet to us, Fuji Restaurant. It's everywhere in Bangkok, and there's always a queue at meal times. Ravenous, as the lunch is mass-production fill-up-tourists-stomach type so we didn't have much. The other tour members actually had platefuls heaped with rice and dishes but we just take a small portion. I had to force 爸爸 to take photos for the dinner as he is just so tired of snapping photos. Apa la... how would the children remember it if no photos, right? That's why I chose to blog as they can no longer deny they had tried this or that :)

L: Fuji Restaurant, R: At Mango Tango for mango sticky rice

Outside Siam Paragon
Since it's going to be our last evening in Bangkok, we had to try Mango Tango, a dessert shop just a few doors from Novotel Siam Square. Photos of Mango Tango and the mango sticky rice above (120B per plate). The portion of glutinous rice is so small compared to the one at Siam Paragon Asian Food Hall. But the mango is sweeter and fresher. The children loved mango sticky rice! Well, they would love anything sweet :)

So full after dessert, we went back to hotel and the children watched Scooby Doo cartoon on Boomerang. Had to let them stay awake awhile to digest the food eaten, so that there's no repeat of indigestion problems.

Bangkok Dream World - Friso Go Explore! Bangkok With Children Day 2

This is the theme park included in our prize, Bangkok Dream World! The children are so excited as they liked theme parks, any theme park! Pick-up from hotel is arranged at 9am. Breakfast buffet at the Novotel Siam Square is included in our accomodation package. Our little boy loved his fried rice, fried egg, hashbrown, milk, waffles, cherry tomatoes, pastries, juices, fresh fruits and dried fruits. Our little girl is very pleased with the sausages, ham, omelette, pastries, waffles, cherry tomatoes, milk, juices, fresh fruits and dried fruits. There are other selections like the Asian corner which only 爸爸 is interested, there is hot food and also cook-to-order noodles. I didn't even have enough time to taste all I wanted as busy serving food to the children, well we still have time as we have another 2 more days to stay. No photos as too busy eating :)

It's about an hour's drive to Bangkok Dream World. We arrived around 10:30am, given until 3:30pm for the visit. As the theme park tickets we got does not incude Snow Town, we purchase our Snow Town tickets at the front desk. Seems like Snow Town is the only place in Bangkok to experience "snow", and the children say they must go to this attraction. Admission to Snow Town is 150B per person.

And let's see what Bangkok Dream World is all about.
At the ticket office of Bangkok Dream World

Playing at the water and Love Garden
We saw some couples that look like they are taking wedding photos at the Love Garden. Our first ride is Bicycle Boat, cruising around the lake. There's a mechanical level for turning right and left, and just pedal like a bicycle to move the boat.
Love Garden and Bicycle Boat
The kiddie ride Speedy Mouse is next. It's really speedy! After that, we take the Cable Car to go to Snow Town. The Cable Car takes us halfway across the theme park, and gives an aerial view of the park.
Speedy Mouse and Cable Car

Fighting dragon and Snow Town
Snow Town! We're given a pair of boots and jacket each. There is no "snow" falling but it's very cold inside, kind of like paying to be in a freezer :) The children only stayed for 15 minutes as they cannot stand the cold. It's 弟弟's first experience in such a "freezer" and 姐姐's second as she had been to Genting's Snow World (think it's closed for maintenance now).

Camera lens got fuzzy after coming out from Snow Town. It's at Monza that we realize some kiddie rides are meant for children under 120cm. So 姐姐 had to forgo Monza although she is just a little taller than the limit. Next up is Thunder Bird. Gosh, this is the ride I dislike most. It looks so tame but was so unkind to me :( It started spinning and going up and down, making me dizzy and screaming for it to stop. And it went on for a long time (at least to me). In the end I found out it's because 姐姐 and I were twisting the steering wheel, that's why we felt like almost going to fly off! 姐姐 complaint that I'm no fun as I don't allow her to press the "up" button. After all the screaming (from me), we got on a tamer ride called Antique Car. It's really like an old old car, the "gas pedal" is so hard to push and the steering is hard like it needed oiling, and it smelt like smoking diesel! It's still fun to be driven around by my dearest girl :) 弟弟 drove with 爸爸 in another antique car.

One of the downside of going to theme parks in the tropics (like Malaysia, Singapore and Bangkok) is the hot weather! Everything outdoors is sweltering hot most of the time, and we have to pray hard it didn't rain. Play Port is the bonus area for children as it's an indoor air-conditioned colourful playground.
Play Port is children's playground. Bonus is air-conditioned!

We took the Monorail which takes us on a leisurely ride to the second half of the theme park. We had to skip Flying Fish as it's for children below 120cm and 姐姐 didn't get to go. After that, another kiddie ride called Indian Boat. The children got to row a canoe around a small man-made stream.

We saw Grand Canyon raft while on the Monorail and it looked exciting and just a little wet. How wrong we are! We should have taken the warning outside seriously :) Grand Canyon is for children over 110cm and 弟弟 just meeting the limit. There weren't many people on the day we went, so we had this Grand Canyon raft all to ourselves. In the hurry to sit down and buckle up, we all sat on one side making the raft loop-sided (blame 爸爸 for his weight :P). Even though it's not scary, it's very wet! I think the children had it worst as they were drenched from head to toe, and 姐姐 complaint that she swallowed some water that went into her mouth :D We had to change the children's clothes right there, luckily we brought a small towel and spare clothes for them. However the poor parents have to bear with wet clothes and now we appreciate the strong sun to dry the clothes on our bodies naturally. So much for adventure!

After all the adventure, time for lunch! Buffet lunch is included at the Food Pavilion, and we weren't expecting anything fancy. True enough, it's steamed rice, yellow rice, stir-fry hor fun, stir-fry chicken, yellow curry chicken, veggies and sweet & sour meat balls. Desserts are green mung bean soup, coconut jelly (tasted like rose syrup and put off the children immediately), colourful jelly in syrup, fresh fruit slices. We were able to refill drinking water here as there aren't any water fountains around the park like in Singapore's Sentosa Island.

Pavillion Buffet and Uncle Tom's Farm
We spent some time walking around Uncle Tom's Farm after quick lunch. We went to Haunted Mansion and the children were so scared. It's air-conditioned but pitch-dark inside. The ang-moh group in front of us were even more scared and they really screamed and they ran back at first (we're not even sure what they saw). The youngsters behind us and 爸爸 just scream for the sake of screaming. I asked 姐姐 to look down at the glow-in-the-dark footsteps as it's very dark in there, and just make our way out quickly since both of us also scared. Poor 弟弟 was crouching and hanging onto 爸爸 like a koala. No photos as don't want to remind them of scary stuff :)

We wander around Fairy Tales Land to cool down. Lots of photo opportunity here :) 弟弟 was scared of the castle as he's afraid there are monsters coming out like Haunted Mansion. But we assured him this is just decoration. He was back to himself after a short while.

Next stop, we look for the Giant House. This is the replica of Jack And The Beanstalk story and air-conditioned inside :)

One more kiddie ride called Racing Car, for children below 120cm only.

We manage to get on Sightseeing Train as we thought it's not operating. Turns out the minder have to drive the train thus there wasn't anyone at the station when we went earlier. Sightseeing Train takes us on a ride to see the sights around the lake. The children get to sit right in front and enjoyed the ride.

Sightseeing Train and Crazy Zone
After that, it's off looking for the 7 Wonders of The World (miniature la). More photos at Crazy Zone, this time the children asked for taking photos.

We thought we could take the Cable Car from the second station after checking out Bump Boat and Bump Car. Turns out only one way ride and we're not able to get from the second station to the front. Also Bump Boat is on maintenance and we decided to skip Bump Car so ended up just walking to-and-fro.

We had to miss the Hollywood Action show and Animal Show as the children wanted to take an elephant ride. Just 50B per person for a short ride. Followed by 20B (or was it 40B) feeding the elephant. The children say the elephant's trunk is very wet when it takes the bananas from their hands. They loved this activity!

Rides/activities we missed:
- Crazy Bus (on maintenance)
- Spider (on maintenance)
- Bump Boat (on maintenance)
- Bump Car (didn't check out)
- Space Mountain (just had lunch and the children didn't want to try)
- 4D cinema (theme is Adventure and the children decided to skip it as they don't want to see monsters in the brochure)
- All the adult (scary) rides like Hurricane, Sky Coaster, Viking, Rapter, Super Splash, Go Kart.

It would be useful to have information of height limits on the brochure/map instead of walking to the ride and find out it's not suitable. That would have saved us time and helped us plan our trip better. Fortunately Bangkok Dream World is not overcrowded like Singapore Universal Studios. The children even say they prefer Bangkok Dream World (in their opinion) as it's just a short wait for the rides compared to their previous experience of 30-60 minutes wait for each ride at Singapore Universal Studios. Not able to compare Singapore Universal Studios with Bangkok Dream World, Singapore Universal Studios is "brand name" cartoon rides but Bangkok Dream World is just "normal" fun for kids. As with "brand name", expect "brand name" prices too but of course the safety features are outstanding and it's new. Oh, and not forgetting about Malaysia' very own Genting Theme Park. In fact Genting Theme Park is quite nice for its Outdoor Theme Park with the cool weather at Genting Highlands (only the crowd is crazy there too especially for school holidays). Anyway each has its own unique features.

When we rush to the main entrance, we're already being paged even though you won't be able to hear inside the theme park. We only got on the rides once, and skipped the shows. Still, the children were super happy and having loads of fun.

Back to hotel and jam as usual at the city center. We were so hungry by this time and it rained! We got some pastries from the hotel and waited for the rain to stop. Then it's off to dinner at Sizzlers Siam Center. Oops, totally forgot photos as too busy eating.  Tomorrow's arrangement is early start to Safari World.
