Visit to Penang Heritage Clan Jetties Chew Jetty and Tan Jetty - Pre-Chinese New Year 2013

There are several activities for Chinese New Year. We had done clothes shopping end of last year since 姐姐 prefers the Christmasy dresses compared to Chinese New Year styles.

Spring at Queensbay Mall
Early CNY tossing 鱼生 at Sakae Sushi. This year the children seem to enjoy it more. Queensbay Mall is sooo packed this Sunday. When 姐姐 had her ballet class on Saturday, we were stuck in traffic jam on Scotland Road due to Thaipusam crowd.

Toss and eat for good luck :)
The Chinese New Year spring decorations around Queensbay Mall. They wanted to take photo with all the toy snakes they saw on the trees.

Some photos just because we're there. On hot days most people hide in malls. I like the way the lanterns looked. But the mall is quiet as there is no activity even though it's a replacement holiday. We might be back for the weekend.

Cannot escape eating when going out with the children.

They had cheese baked rice and jelly for dessert (part of the set). They couldn't finish the rice but still have room for dessert.

Chew Jetty and Tan Jetty visit

Since we're in town and the weather is fine, we played tourist and went to visit Chew Jetty and Tan Jetty. 爸爸 had become quite an expert of some of the Penang heritage areas after bringing Ally, 大姑 and gang around there.

Stopover at Victoria Street (Lebuh Victoria) for "Property" sculpture.
This is at the section after the big fire station.

Made it to Chew Jetty! And lucky to find a parking spot just near the entrance.
Chew Jetty entrance.

Chew Jetty is rather crowded at the time we went. It is also more commercialized, there are many stores selling souvenirs or snacks. There are several Japanese tour groups there with their guides. Wow, some of the ahjummas were wearing heels or high-heeled strappy wedges, pottering around on the wooden planks :)

One of the purpose to visit Chew Jetty - for the mural "Children in a boat". However it faded very badly  *sobs* :( Didn't see any of the Japanese tourist stopped to see it, they probably didn't know about the mural art that is so popular in Penang since last year.
The faded "Children In A Boat" at Chew Jetty

View of the sea from "Children In A Boat" mural. We saw a fish jump up a little further down.

There are houses along both sides of Chew Jetty. We walked until the end where there's a temple. 爸爸 was so busy trying to take photos while the tourists were busy admiring the view there. We manage not to capture the tourists in the photo, they were busy looking at the view but not really taking photos (maybe too hot for them?).

Penang Bridge in the background. Not sure if you can see with the sun exposure but I could see in the original photo :P

This is the part of Chew Jetty which we can see Penang ferry terminal

弟弟's expression is so funny here :) too hot I suppose :P

On the way out, we saw a jelly fish swimming around the stilts of the houses. This is the first time the children saw a jelly fish at such close range (which is not in an aquarium). We stopped by one of the stores to get 冰条 flavoured ice in tubes - Milo flavour for 姐姐, lychee for 弟弟 and sour plum for me.
Beh tahan, holding hands and eating 冰条 - colourful wall somewhere on Chew Jetty.
Because we allowed them to eat ice, everything became bearable for them. They are ok to walk to Tan Jetty nearby. Tan Jetty is where Ally said they followed wedding photo troupe and mistook it or Chew Jetty earlier. Compared to Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty is quiet and peaceful. After the last house selling Thai food, it's a long row of wooden planks to the end (no rails, nothing! Next drop is into the water argh!). For me it's so scary :P but the children think it's an adventure. Seems like the waters off Tan Jetty is clearer compared to Chew Jetty. Maybe due to the Thaipusam weekend where there's a huge influx of visitors and maybe also becuase Chew Jetty is nearer to the Penang ferry terminal.

Towards the end there's a very special toilet. Only a rectangular hole im the middle hahaha! Out of respect for people who had done their business there, I told 爸爸 not to take photo of that toilet :) Actually we can see Komtar from here, just that 爸爸 focus on water-theme too hot to take any shots from different angle and we had to watch the children very closely.

There are a few people fishing here.

See, they went to almost the end of Tan Jetty with 爸爸

Told 爸爸 to take photo of the quaint houses, end up he focus on the water

地板很烫!

Sitting in front of the place selling Thai food. See the wedding couple at the back?
After we are home, the children keep talking about Chew Jetty and Tan Jetty, and that they were not scared at all. Honestly this is not a place for hyperactive kids, or maybe you could stop at the last house and not go to the end. And thank goodness it's high tide, otherwise we would only see mud around the area. For the record, the day we went is 初十七.

God of Prosperity and Jiang Nan Scholars at 1st Avenue

Such heavy traffic around the malls, all the carparks were full, even the open space carparks. We were lucky to find parking along Lebuh McNair, which is a short walk to 1st Avenue. So the kids get to see God of Prosperity (财神) and  Jiang Nan Scholars (江南四大才子). Oh ya, thanks to them the children got chocolate packaged as gold coins.

We had a little tea break at Gloria Jean's Coffees. I love watching the children eat. However they are really possesive and even behaved like little dinos or 暴龙 when it comes to food. We (or rather they) had Cookies and Cream Chiller, Irish Nut Creme, cheesecake, almond pear pie and popcorn (which is complimentary with the chiller). They loved everything especially popcorn.
Enjoying at Gloria Jean's Coffees

When they went to wash their hands, they saw M&M's mascot outside. They were so excited as the M&M mascot is really cute.

I'm trying to limit the number of post so trying to squeeze everything here.

姐姐's first co-curricular activities in school

姐姐's school require all the Year 3 students to participate in co-curricular activities (Gerak Kerja Kokurikulum or GERKO). They are required to choose one uniformed body and one club. It's taking one Saturday every 2 or 3 weeks. Together with the co-curricular activities, they are provided additional 1 hour coaching in BM. So she's in school on Saturdays for 3+ hours. There will be about 10 Saturdays which they are required to attend the co-curricular activities.

She chose St John and Art Club. We'll see how it is as time goes by. Again, have to update with photo when she buys the t-shirt for pasukan beruniform.

Her 绘画班 notice board. Two of her drawings were selected to be displayed (I highlighted in red frame using MSPaint :P).
She's to wear the co-curricular activity t-shirt one schoolday each week. So it's one less day for school uniform management, hurray :) The t-shirt she got is size 38 (L) so it's very big. Probably can wear until Year 6 haha.
Finally she got her St John t-shirt in April.

2013 New Year Countdown 《用马来西亚的天气来说爱你》

The children went for New Year countdown with 爸爸. It's an event by Astro called 《用马来西亚的天气来说爱你》. They have carnival during daytime but we didn't know about it and it kept raining. Maybe next time if they have the carnival we might go even if it rains :P I didn't go as cannot tahan the crowd, noise (it's a concert) and standing for 2-3 hours. Here are their photos taken by 爸爸. Actually without going there, I could see the fireworks (I should say multiple fireworks) from our balcony ** ngek ngek **

They were wearing the school t-shirt (弟弟 is wearing her old school t-shirt). 姐姐 received memo from school before school holidays if the students from her school attends, they should be in the school t-shirt.
Everywhere they go, it's eat eat eat :)

Christmas 2012 and Back-To-School Preparations

Going around for Christmas decoration photos. All the malls are in Christmas mood :)

Santa's North Pole Express Musical Live Show at Gurney Plaza
Both of them seem not so familiar with the Christmas story.

Joyous Neighbourhood Day
They had fun playing games at the nearby playground. Even it's drizzling, they still wanted to play. 姐姐 won 3rd prize for jumping with balloon game.

Garfield and Friends Christmas Musical Live Show at Queensbay Mall
They seem to enjoy the Garfield more as he is a cartoon. 姐姐 purposely wear Garfield dress to take photo with Garfield and Friends. Some of the crowd must be disappointed as they only give out 20 passes for this last session of the day for meet and greet.

Kimnovak school uniform hunting
We're actually in town for school uniform. Even though other back-to-school counters at the malls were pretty quiet, the uniform shops along Jalan Magazine is bustling with activity. We got 姐姐 Kimnovak school uniform. Did you know Kimnovak 金露华 has facebook page? This time she'll be wearing size 28L pinafore, size 3.5 white shirt and size 25 school shorts. The L for pinafore is a slightly different cutting, it has a longer skirt. Compared to the size 29 that she tried, 28L is slimmer cut but longer skirt and suit her better. The size 29 is still slightly shorter than even 28L, too wide, and it looked sloppy on her. The staff at Kimnovak did not offer us the pinafore with L option. I commented to their staff at least 3 times that the pinafore is too short. But they just keep giving me bigger size. Until I asked them, didn't you have the longer and slimmer cut version that I heard about? Only then they bring out the 28L for 姐姐 to try. Maybe they didn't want to promote this version to the general public. Glad I persisted for a better fitting size.
Remember to ask for the L version of pinafore for slimmer and longer cut
Next on the list will be school shoes hunting for the spare pair since she will be in school almost everyday due to extra curricular activities.

Colourful Sunday at The WhiteAways Courtyard
This is organized by Penang Global Tourism in conjuction with Car Free Day. This is not a competition, just a fun activity for the kids. The children were given Christmas headband and cap for the Christmas theme, in addition to souvenir for participation. 姐姐 got a ticket to Adventure Zone for lucky draw, but 弟弟 didn't. How to go since ticket is so expensive?
The drawing is rather complicated thus the kids spent quite a bit of time on it

The finished colouring. They're actually wearing the Garfield t-shirt which says Merry Christmas.

This is taken by 爸爸

The staff taking their photo :)
After completing this activity, we went to have breakfast at China House. 姐姐 enter the drawing contest there and she drew Santa from her headband. 爸爸 didn't take photo of it as she rushed to drop it into the box. Well never mind, since there are so many nice entries she doesn't have much of a chance as her drawing is also a little messy.

The children received vouchers for free frozen yoghurt at Gurney Paragon. We went there one weekend to try it. They liked it very much, but too sourish for adults. We should have gotten some toppings added but the guy at the counter didn't tell us about such options.
Moo Cow Frozen Yoghurt at Gurney Paragon

We walked around Gurney Drive
We played tourist for a couple hours and tried the food at Gurney Drive, it is really bad, maybe catering for outstation tourists since most stuff like nasi lemak and pasembur we ordered were too sweet. Only rojak is nice. I think even food at the Sungai Pinang kopitiam is better. Pity the tourists eating there :P

Final Christmas-themed activity :) 姐姐 plays Deck The Halls while 弟弟 sing. She learnt the solfege in her JXC Book 2 lessons, and now she added the chords. That's why some parts are choppy :P
